the Artist

After years working as a teacher, Mariette returned to sculpture- her first creative vocation and a passion that runs in her family. Having achieved a degree in Fine Arts, she has dedicated her practice to exploring the complexity of human emotion.

Primarily sculpting busts, Mariette is drawn to the organic process of building textured, expressive faces. Through mark-making, and drawn to the emotional resonance of a piece rather than strict realism, she seeks to evoke feeling through subtle expressions, posture, movement, and the deliberate positioning of her subjects.

Her sculptures are never intended to feel static. Instead, they embrace a sense of dynamism and presence, capturing emotion, spirit, and humanity. Through cracks, rough edges, and imperfect surfaces, Mariette acknowledges beauty and the reality of the human condition.

Influenced by poetry, especially the work of e.e. cummings, her subjects often possess a quiet wistfulness and thoughtfulness. Each piece is an exploration of emotion and connection, inviting viewers to engage with the essence of the individual beyond outward appearance.
